According to the FBI’s annual report, hate crimes rose by seventeen percent in 2017 making it the third year in a row that this number has risen. In the divisive world that we find ourselves in, it seems that differences are the main things driving us apart. More than half of hate crimes in 2017 were because of race or ethnicity with black Americans and Middle Eastern Americans the main targets. Nearly a quarter were because of religious beliefs with Jews and Muslims receiving the vast majority of hate. Just over ten percent were because of sexual orientation. And all of this is only looking at crimes that were actually reported.
Christ invites us to a very different way to live with other’s differences, and that is what Viva! Tolerance explores. The term “tolerance” has become a hot-button word today, one that both culture and Christian sub-culture tend to swing and miss on. Over these four lessons, your group will explore what tolerance really means and how we can show the love of Jesus to those who are different than us. Specifically, we will look at the following:
Week 1: Matthew 9:9-13
Week 2: Romans 14:1-12
Week 3: 1 Corinthians 5:9-13
Week 4: Daniel 7:13-14, Revelation 5:9-10, 7:9-10
