No matter what study you look at, there is a consensus among mental health experts that anxiety in teens has been increasing over the last decade. Many even suggest that the picture the statistics paint is optimistic based on the stigma associated with being anxious. It can also be debated about the role faith culture plays into the discussion as well: does it increase the stigma or does it help get to the root of the issue?
Regardless of the answer, the fact remains that the issue needs to be discussed. For starters, according to the 2015 Child Mind Institute Children's Mental Health Report roughly 80% of teens who have a diagnosable anxiety disorder are not getting the treatment they really need. Beyond that, with the rise of general feelings of anxiety, we need to create spaces where teens can safely discuss how they feel so that we can help them determine ways to promote healthier living.
