First 2 Years: New Year’s Resolutions

Not everyone’s New Year is on December 31st. The Chinese New Year is in February. The Thai New Year is in April. And the Youth Ministry New Year is in September. For many of us, we see our year as September to August. In celebration of our New Year beginning, I thought I’d set a few resolutions for myself.

Honor the Sabbath better. Our team works 6 days a week (Tuesday-Sunday), which means I get one day to myself. I (reluctantly) admit that I have spent that day working on several occasions. Whether it is answering non-urgent emails, stopping by the office for a few hours or spending more time with students, I find myself consistently breaking Sabbath. This year, I commit to making strong use of the “Do Not Disturb” function on my phone.

Become slow to speak. I’ve been taking a tough look at myself recently and been asking some close friends what areas I can grow in. If I’m being honest with you, one of my biggest weaknesses is that I am way to quick to speak. I am a fairly opinionated person and sometimes I don’t take that extra second to ask myself, “How can I communicate my comment with grace?” or even, “Is my comment worth being said?” I want to make sure that people are feeling heard and respected in my conversations with them. I want to make sure that I am always building up others with my words.

Make better use of my free time. As I was re-doing my budget recently, I came to the realization that my Netflix, Hulu Plus, and HBO Go subscriptions were on my non-negotiable list. As soon as I get home, I turn on a season of television and just power through it. While I do see it as valuable re-charge and recovery time, there are other things I need to make sure I do first. I want to do two things: read more and listen more. I have a stack of INCREDIBLE books on my desk waiting to be read and I have a long list of podcasts (sermons, Ted Talks, etc.) waiting to be listened to. I want to dedicate my free time to learning more and growing more.

What are some things you are going to commit to this next year?
